Is This Harsh?

Check out this story on Fox News web.

So many students were involved in a cheating scenario that the administration decided to cancel the graduation ceremony and just mail the diplomas.  Though they know that not every single senior cheated, they are very convinced that every senior knew about it and no one came forward.

Losing out on the opportunity for celebration is tough especially for those who actually worked for their diplomas, but I think the punishment, in this case, fits the crime.  If you devalue the ceremony and more importantly, the diploma itself, then what is the point?  Why have a celebration for a diploma that does not indicate hard work and perseverance?

The saddest part of this story is that there are parents protesting and even organizing another ceremony.  Do they intend to communicate that cheating is ok or at least not all that bad?   I never cease to be amazed at parents who willingly overlook the faults of their children.  Sometimes I wonder if it is out of guilt that they try to make their kids’ lives as “comfortable” as possible and thereby either look the other way at their sin or even worse justify it .  In reality they hurt themselves and their children.

“Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.”  Proverbs 29:17
